  • Domain name hijacking!, May 6, 2004
Domain names are becoming \"hot\" property - as in *theft* for resale. More and more companies are finding they cannot get their trademarked names as a domain name because so few good names are left. But sometimes it\'s outright extortion as when a Fortune 500 company name is reserved by someone that has no intention of developing a site under the domain, but simply \"parks\" it somewhere and waits to be contacted by the big boys to purchase the name for astronomical fees.

  • Why You Need A Domain Name, Why You Need A Domain Name, May 2, 2004
On the World Wide Web your domain name is your own unique identity. No two parties can ever hold the same domain name simultaneously; therefore your Internet identity is totally unique. If you have a business site on the Internet your domain name is your own online brand and in a sense you can use your domain name as your online business card. Templatemonster Glossary

 Domain Name
The unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots. The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general. A given machine may have more than one Domain Name but a given Domain Name points to only one machine. Forexample, the domain names:

domain.com,
mail.domain.com,
workshop.domain.com

can all refer to the same machine, but each domain name can refer to no more than one machine. Usually, all of the machines on a given Network will have the same thing as the right-hand portion of their Domain Names.

 Domain Registration
The act of registering a second-level domain through an official registrar. "Registering" a domain name means you are associated with that domain name for the period of the registration. Registration rates vary by registrar.

 Domain Registrar
This is the company where you actually search for a domain name you like, and register so the domain name is yours and cannot be taken by anyone else. There is usually a small yearly fee for this.
