Online money making has already become quite a legitimate way of earning a living. The web design world of today offers lots of opportunities for you. The first thing that comes to the mind, when you think about promotion in a web design niche, is an affiliate program. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of affiliate programs for WordPress and the web design niche. But, which one do you join? Today we are going to compare affiliate programs from TemplateMonster, ThemeForest, ElegantThemes, MOJO Themes, and Wix.

First, we will provide a general outline image and then summarize the information using a comparison chart. The web development affiliate programs are quite versatile, so to make it easier to compare them we decided to pay attention to the following aspects:

  • The range of products the company offers.
  • The commission rate.
  • Who can become an affiliate?
  • Affiliate tools the company provides.
  • The payout process.
  • Bonuses, if there are any.

MOJO Themes

MOJO Themes is a marketplace, selling WordPress, Joomla, eCommerce and Tumblr themes with the overall number of products about 2,000. To become an affiliate of MOJO Themes is really quite simple. Anyone who has an account automatically becomes their affiliate. Your username equals your affiliate ID which you can use in the referral links. Everyone who comes through your affiliate link is tracked. And if the person makes a deposit or a purchase, you will get 30% commission from his initial payment.

The average price of MOJO templates is $35. Performing simple calculations we arrive at $10 for each successful referral. The duration of cookies is 30 days. You can track your earnings in your account and at the end of each month request the payout. However, the payout minimum is $50. So if you don't reach it, keep on working until the end of the next month. Also bear in mind that you must have a PayPal account, as this is the only payment method supported. To enhance your affiliate campaign MOJO Themes provide you with banners, logos and anniversary banner bundles.

ThemeForest offers, perhaps, the biggest collection of templates on the web. On their website you may find 31,000+ templates of all types and categories. ThemeForest is a part of Envato Marketplace, which provides you with more possibilities to earn, as you get your commission if the person you referred buys any Envato product. To become an affiliate you need to create an Envato account and obtain approval. After that, you generate your referral link and send traffic to any Envato page. You are going to get 30% commission for the first cash deposit or purchase the person has made. There are some eCommerce themes that cost $79-$90, but the price of the majority of the templates varies from $10 to $40.

So let's assume for the moment that the average cost of a ThemeForest template is about $30. As in this article, we are focusing on making money from promoting and selling templates; we won't take into account other Envato products. So for one sale, you are going to get around $9. You can use the banners and logos provided or, if you are skillful enough, Envato Market API logo. The minimum payout is $50 and you can receive your money through PayPal, Moneybookers/Skrill, SWIFT or Payoneer.

Wix is a cloud-based web development platform, which allows anyone to create their own HTML5 website in online mode. This makes them a little bit different from all the rest of the web design affiliate programs. You don't actually promote and sell templates, you need to drive traffic to Wix and get paid when your referral buys Wix Premium Plan. To sign up to the Wix affiliate program you need to fill in the application form and be approved. Unlike other affiliate programs covered in this article, you don't get the percent from the sale. You are paid $100 for every premium user you refer who doesn’t cancel within 14 days. It seems to be easy money.

However, remember that the free Wix plan is quite good and offers everything a person may need to start a website. So the conversion might not be as high as you expect. There is also a monthly sales target. You need to refer at least 3 sales per month. Cookies expire in 30 days. You can request a payout at the end of each month and you will be paid for the sales of the previous month. You need to make a minimum of 3 sales to get your money. Make sure you have a PayPal account, as this is the only way to withdraw the money. For your affiliate campaign, you can use banners or invent something on your own.

The ElegantThemes collection is presented by 87 WordPress themes. The company uses quite an unusual scheme: you don't buy any particular template separately, but pay a certain sum of money and get access to all 87 themes at once. ElegantThemes offers their clients three pricing plans:

  • Personal - $69 per year;
  • Developer - $89 per year;
  • Lifetime Access - $249 once.

To become an affiliate you will need to create an account. The commission is 50% per sale. It seems to be the highest in the market. Still, bear in mind that when choosing this or that pricing plan the person is going to pay once and get all of the 87 themes. This means he won't come back through the same link to buy another template. In this case, you will need to drive really good traffic to maintain a high conversion rate. The cookies live for 60 days. A good compensatory bonus is the renewal commissions. This means that when customers pay their yearly renewal fees you will get your commission from that. ElegantThemes doesn't provide any particular tools, so you will have to create something of your own.

TemplateMonster offers one of the most competitive affiliate programs in the WordPress and web design niche. They offer 26,000+ products of all types and categories. Absolutely anyone can join the affiliate program. There is no approval procedure and the registration process is reduced to entering your email address. The more sales you make the higher commission you are going to have the next month. The cookies are active for 365 days, which increases your chances of earning. The average template on costs $90. This means you can get $27-$45 per sale! The minimum payout is $100, but as you see, this sum can be reached easily. The thing that you won't find in any other affiliate program is the possibility of earning a supervisor's 5% cut. This means that if you refer other people to the TemplateMonster affiliate program you become their supervisor and get an additional 5% from their earnings.

If you are searching for other possibilities to help you benefit from the web design niche TemplateMonster provides them too. Web studios and individual web developers have an opportunity to be included in the TemplateMonster Web Studio Catalog and to get orders from their clients. To become a certified partner you need to pass a Certification Centre course. Now, as we have promised, here is a comparison chart summarizing all the information above.

As you can see, there are lots of opportunities for making money from affiliate programs. However, it would be wrong to regard each particular program superficially. You need to consider lots of details:

  1. Very well explained. Keep updating us like more unique thoughts on technology! Keep updating with us!

  2. I believe Wix would be more detrimental to a designer than helpful. You get $100 instead of the cost of building a website, which is substantially more. Would rather have life-time clients and build relationships than take a payout from a company that is cheapening the playing field.

  3. After watching this comparison chart, i think i will work with templatemonster. But i never heard anyone buy a theme from this site. But i think i should give it a try. I have over 100k USA traffic (30 days). Let’s see how much i make in 30 days, thanks for the article.
