I was looking for a simple shopping cart solution for a website and from what I could read on the internet, Magento was exactly what I needed. I installed it pretty easily and was up in just about no time. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble setting it up the way I wanted mosty because I had no experience with Magento whatsoever. It's pretty simple and good out of the box, but when you need to tweak it to make it simple for your client, that's when the problems begins. My client only had a handful of products, and this was made to have an extensive gallery of products. I needed a scooter, and this was a cadillac. There were so many options for each product that it was way too much. My client could barely use any technology and there were like 4 pages of forms to fill every time I wanted to add a product. I tried as much as I could to simplify the process, but this was way too much. Plus, the site had to be bilingual. Which was another round of modifications. I ended up crashing the site several times doing simple modifications and I got really frustrated. Don't get me wrong though, Magento is a very solid platform that is allowing multi-languages and about a million other things. What I finally did is code my own (way way simpler) shopping cart and admin tools and I reused the css from the site. This was kind of a nightmare as well because the structure of Magento is very complex and in many directories. In other words, if you're not familiar with Magento, or your client is barely able to use technology, better take a simple html template instead. I recommend only for people who have good knowledge of Magento or at least some solid experience with php based CMS.
