The WordPress Excerpt is an optional summary or description of a post; in short, a post summary.
Excerpts are used to shorten your blog posts so that only part of the entry — usually the introduction or a summary of the post — is displayed, instead of the entire entry. Using excerpts is completely optional.
There are three types of excerpts: Manual Excerpt which is entered into the post separately, Automated Excerpt which is generated from post content, and tag excerpt which uses the content up to the specified part where the tag is inserted:
