Path hints option is one of the powerful tools in Magento e-commerce platform. It is useful for developers and designers to work with files and find their location.

Different sections of the website are controlled by different .phtml files. Path hints show path to the file and the name of the block used for specific section.

In order to enable path hints, administrator of the website should log into Magento admin panel and navigate to System > Configuration tab. In Current Configuration Scope drop down option, a store view should be chosen first. After that one should navigate to Advanced > Developer > Debug and enable path hints there.

After that a user can see file paths on the website. If the website is live, there is an option to restrict users to see path hints, and they will be available for specific IPs only:
