Super User is a user account with special privileges far beyond those of most user accounts needed to administer and maintain the system. Depending on the system, the actual name of this account might be Super Admin, Administrator, Admin, etc.

Super Users is the most powerful usergroup. You can meet Super User roles in Joomla, WordPress, Prestashop, Magento, and other CMS/eCommerce engines.

For instance, in Joomla, Super Users have the highest privilege level and can make changes or add new features or content to any section of the website. They can do anything that a person can do in Joomla, either from the frontend or the backend:

  • publish and edit articles;

  • set global configurations;

  • install and uninstall modules, components, and templates;

  • disable user accounts, create new accounts, and more.

In addition to this, a Joomla site may have more than one designated Super User. Thus these administrators can add, edit and remove Super User accounts. Furthermore, once created they cannot be as easily deleted. You have to change the user’s group to something other than Super Users first. Then you can delete them.

Also, Super Users can block the user from logging in or change the password on another Super User account. Because of this, give a bit of thought to who you need to grant this highest level of access to.
