Content marketing… Who didn’t hear about it?
According to Ahrefs Keyword Explorer, there are on average 71K monthly searches for this term globally. A lot, isn’t it?
So what is content marketing!?
The most popular definition is the one from Content Marketing Institute:
“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”
That’s a nice definition, but what does it actually mean? What should this “strategic approach” look like? Where should you start?
Every marketer, sooner or later, gets to the point where the following questions arise:
- What is the best way to create content?
- What is my target audience and where to find them?
- What type of content should I create?
- What tools / techniques should I use for content creation?
- Where to publish it?
- How should I distribute the content I create?
- What tools / methods should I use for content promotion?
For a starter in content marketing, many questions will pop-up and, for each question, there will be multiple different answers.
All this can be overwhelming!
So many questions and so many possible ways to go. Content marketing incorporates a whole set of different disciplines and skills needed to be successful, and every marketer should be at least familiar with all of them. That being said, we should all become T-shaped marketers.
In the near past, marketers defined themselves by their specialty. They had their vertical titles like SEO specialist, Social Media specialist, Email marketer, Outreach specialist etc. and that has led to their vertical work.
Today, it is time to say goodbye to the vertical specialists and say hello to the T-shaped marketers. The T-shaped marketer is one who has a broad but shallow understanding of all subjects, and a deep knowledge of one or few of them.
